Letter to NUJ members

Tomorrow Lord Justice Leveson will publish the findings of his inquiry into the culture, practices and ethics in the press and his examination of the relationship of the press with the public, police and politicians.

It was a year ago that the NUJ fought to be a core participant in the inquiry. We had to battle to ensure that the voice of working journalists was heard, and not just that of owners and the editors of the national press. To inform our submissions and evidence we set up a Leveson email address and asked all members to contribute their concerns, experiences and views. In particular we asked members who wished to contribute evidence to the inquiry to come forward anonymously if they felt unable to speak openly about their experiences. Read the rest of this entry »

The December branch meeting is approaching fast, on an earlier night of Tuesday 18 December, usual time of 6pm. As long as the Mayan prophecy doesn’t wipe us all out we will be holding an evening of food and drink and sitting back to view a festive visual show of our members favourite work over the year.

As the Leveson enquiry draws to a close and prepares to deliver the final report, it is clear that there has been a widespread culture of sexism and harassment in the media over the last 30 years. Added to this have been the recent revelations concerning Jimmy Savile and others at the BBC. Victims are either ignored, bullied or sacked. Come and hear campaigners and photographers debate the issue.

With the recent furore over topless royal images, the looming conclusions of the Leveson Enquiry and the collapse of Big Pictures, we were delighted to have Charlie Pycraft who is owed thousands by his former Big Pictures boss Darryn Lyons “Mr Paparazzi” discussing,“The History of Paparazzi – The Big Picture”.

Solidarity to Northern Ireland Broadcasters Fighting Production Order

3rd November, 2012

The following motion was passed unanimously by the London Photographers’ Branch on Tuesday 30 October 2012.

“The London Photographers’ Branch (LPB) wishes to send a message of solidarity to broadcasters in Northern Ireland who are fighting a court order seeking all footage over violent clashes in North Belfast this summer.

The BBC, Ulster TV, Sky News and the Press Association have joined forces in resisting the application that seeks all unbroadcast material and photographs taken during the 12 July disorder in the Ardoyne area. Read the rest of this entry »
