Committee Elections and NUJ Council Nominations

17th July, 2013

At our July branch meeting we will be holding elections for three vacant committee posts. Following the resignation of Larry Herman, there are vacancies for branch secretary and for joint treasurer. Also, we are about to lose our membership secretary, Matt Aslett, who will be based in the Middle East from September, and we need a replacement (there is no branch meeting planned for August).

If you are a full branch member and interested in standing for any of these posts, please come to the meeting, or send in a nomination. It really doesn’t matter if you haven’t done anything like this before – you will receive help and support from other committee members. Committee meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month (except August) at 6.00pm at Headland House.

If you have questions about any of the posts, or would like to talk about nominating yourself, please get in touch with me, or with any of the other LPB committee members (contact details on the Committee page of this website).

We will also be voting on any nominations we receive for the casual vacancies on various NUJ Councils.

In our July branch meeting, we will be discussing photobooks. In recent years, self-publishing technology has enabled photobooks to be produced by photographers independently of the big publishing houses, and new photography ebook formats have emerged for tablets and mobiles. This discussion will look at how self-publishing and the new generation of photobooks can be used as an additional storytelling platform for photojournalists.

Marc Vallée is a London-based documentary photographer whose work covers the London graffiti scene, anti-skateboarding architecture, youth culture and political dissent. He has published three limited edition photography books in the last year and is currently working on a fourth. He has a independent approach to publishing, rooted in the DIY punk zine culture, and has recently collaborated on exhibitions with The Photocopy Club: XEROX AND DESTROY  and RIOT at the Doomed Gallery in east London.

Steven Lee is a Malaysian photographer based in the UK. He began his photographic career as a documentary and travel photographer in the 90’s. In 2000 he published his prize-winning book ‘Outside Looking In : Kuala Lumpur’. In 2002, he photographed ‘A Taste for Freedom’, a photobook commission for AntiSlavery International UK on specially prepared Indian recipes by Chattar Singh of Rajasthan. In 2007 he published ‘MALAYSIANS’, and ‘MUSEO’, is a print-on-demand publication. He is the founder of KL PHOTOAWARDS, an international Contemporary Portrait Photography competition centered in Malaysia.

There will also be a 5 minute slideshow of the work of Martin Brink, a photographer based in Sweden known for his explorations of the digital photobook medium, and founder of The Digital Photobook (, a curated showcase of digital photobooks.
