LPB calls for Getty Images boycott

27th March, 2014

The LPB has proposed a Late Notice motion to the April NUJ Delegate Meeting in Eastbourne calling for a union-wide boycott of the purchase or use of photographs from Getty Images. This follows an announcement by the company that it is making 35 million pictures available free of charge for “non-commercial” use.

The Getty Images definition of “non-commercial” is extraordinarily wide. Most significantly for our members, it includes all editorial use. It also includes blogs using Google Ads to generate income – only direct promotion of a product, service or company is regarded as commercial.

This is a disastrous move for photographers. The British Journal of Photography (BJP) has described it as having “single-handedly redefined the entire photography market”. It cannot be allowed to stand. More detail can be found on the BJP website here and here.

LATE NOTICE MOTION AGREED UNANIMOUSLY AT THE LPB MARCH MEETING:

Boycott Getty Images

This DM is appalled at Getty’s decision to make its photographic content available free of charge for so-called “non-commercial” use, thereby further undermining the ability of photographers to earn a living. This DM instructs the NEC to ensure NUJ publications avoid the use of Getty Images and to call upon all members to boycott the purchase or use of Getty Images photographic content wherever possible until Getty reverses this decision.

LPB Production Order DM Motion

8th October, 2012

The following motion was passed unanimously at the 2012 NUJ Delegate Meeting in Newcastle.

This DM notes with alarm the increase use of Production Orders by police to seize photographs, footage and audio recordings made by professional journalists at public order events such as the student protests, the 2011 summer riots and the Dale Farm eviction. Read the rest of this entry »

NUJ DM Delegate Election Re-Run

22nd August, 2012

Unfortunately one of our LPB delegates has dropped out of representing the branch at the NUJ DM in October. Our reserve has also had  to back out.

At the next branch meeting, Tuesday 28 August, we will need to re-elect a new delegate and two new reserves to fulfill our role at the DM.

The DM is where all union decisions are discussed and voted on democratically, delivering all the policy for the following years.

LPB has motions submitted on a change to the ethics code, fighting sexism in the industry and continuing to protect journalistic material and sources.

We are also encouraging our student members who would like to attend to contact us. Our branch will cover the cost of one student member to attend the DM and work with other students from across the country, to report on the delegate meeting. This is a great opportunity to work with other journalism students and meet a wide range of NUJ members from across the country.

2012 DM Delegate Nominations

11th May, 2012

This year’s NUJ Delegate Meeting is to be held in Newcastle, starting on 5 October and will last two days.

In preparation at the next London Photographers’ branch meeting, 6pm, Tuesday 29 May at Headland House, we will be taking nominations and voting on the delegates that will represent LPB. The DM nominations deadline is Friday 1 June and LPB has been allocated two delegates.

We will also be taking nominations on the DM-elected bodies.
