Apology from Topshop

Following a meeting with Arcadia Group, Adam Goldman, company secretary and Tracy Dixon, Topshop’s regional controller, the company has issued a full apology for the treatment of NUJ photographer Jess Hurd in its flagship Oxford Street store in December 2011.

Jess Hurd, chair of the NUJ London Photographers’ Branch was assaulted, dragged through the store and arrested whilst covering a peaceful UK Uncut protest. She was later de-arrested but banned from the store.

An Introduction to Final Cut Pro

An introduction to Final Cut Pro
27th/28th April – Headland House 10-5pm

Content
A course for all photographers, who wish to extend their skills base to include video editing.

Expected learning outcomes
Participants will be able to produce multimedia slideshows, edit/export video content/edit audio, and begin to use FCP as part of their regular workflow – whether producing slideshows, videos or audio podcasts.

We will also touch on other packages in the Final Cut Studio suite – Motion and Soundtrack Pro, as well as Adobe Photoshop and After Effects. For the budget conscious, most if not all workflows shown will also work in Apple’s Final Cut Express (FCE) software.

Participants will be able to produce industry standard newspaper multimedia packages by the end of the course.

Course Tutor
Sion Touhig is an award-winning photographer and decided to take on video as an additional skill in 2006. He began shooting and editing video for clients like the Sunday Telegraph, Good Housekeeping and Greenpeace.

Now living in Singapore, Sion has worked as Executive Multimedia Editor/Videographer at the Straits Times Multimedia Centre (MMC) since 2008. The MMC, comprising a small team of multimedia reporters, camera operators and editors (10 journalists, 4 camera operators, 10 editors) produces an average of 25-30 video news and features reports per day, 7 days a week, to deadline, as well as undertaking assignments for external clients.

Sion is now working as Deputy Multimedia Editor at ‘Today’, Singapore’s other English language national newspaper, and is responsible for developing the newspaper’s multimedia strategy.

Sion has completed edit/shooting and Video journalism courses with the BBC, Press Association and is a certified Apple FCP user but not a certified trainer. The knowledge he will be imparting is based upon 5 years experience of producing multimedia content for newspapers and other web clients, and producing finished video journalism reports to deadline.

Course requirements
No prior knowledge of Final Cut Pro is expected. The course will be taught in demo form with laptop and projector. Any participants with their own FCP/FCE enabled laptop will be welcome to bring it and follow along. Course notes in PDF form will be available.

Essential Photoshop for Photojournalists

This one-day course, organised by the London Photographers’ Branch, will demonstrate how to use Photoshop, Bridge and Adobe Camera RAW (the three linked programmes that make up Adobe Photoshop) to:

Make corrections of brightness, contrast and colour balance to out-of-camera RAW files (using ACR) and JPEGs (using adjustment layers)
Make local adjustments to parts of an image
Rename, batch caption and keyword images
Set up a batch resizing action

It will also cover the basic elements of good workflow, including file naming, image storage and back-up.

The course is aimed specifically at photojournalists, and will not explore methods of gross image manipulation that might be employed by commercial photographers or graphic designers. The course will be tutored by freelance photojournalist, digital imaging lecturer and branch member Martin Shakeshaft.

Please note: participants will need to bring their own laptop and software.

Photoshop Tutor Needed

The London Photographers’ Branch is looking for a tutor to deliver a one-day Photoshop course in January 2011. The course outline (below) was drawn up following a survey of branch members earlier this year. Anyone interested in teaching it should email [email protected], including details of relevant experience, by the 13th December.

First Aid training for photographers

Last month the branch held a one day Emergency Life Support Training course tailored to the needs of street photographers. With the time kindly donated by tutor Elliot Rogers from White Star Medical assisted by Clive Wilson.

The certified course covered:

CPR (pictured)
Choking
Recovery Position
Shock
Bleeding
Burns
Head Injuries
Managing Medical Emergencies

One photographer said, “An excellent course, covering more than one would hope to deal with in a lifetime” another that it was “invaluable to street photographers”.

Two new training courses available for members

Business of Freelance Photography

LPB members will be given booking priority for the 12 available places on a one day course run by Nick McGowan-Lowe on 21 May. ‘The Business of Freelance Photography: How to survive the downturn and thrive In a tough market’ is aimed at both established freelance photographers and those who are newly freelance.

The cost is: £90 (NUJ members); £67 (student members); £130 (non-members)

Emergency Life Support Training

The London Photographers Branch is offering members the opportunity of attending a First Aid one day course tailored to street photographers. This course is open to branch members only and the 12 places will be on a first come, first served basis at a special LPB rate of £5. Email [email protected] if you wish to take part.

The White Star Medical, First Aid certificated course and will take place at Headland House on Wednesday 2nd June, 10am – 5.30pm

Tutor Elliott Rodgers plans to teach the core principles of a one day Emergency Life Support course. The one day course will train photographers to take immediate life saving steps until further medical assistance can be bought to the casualty.
